Meteorological Towers

State Based Anemometer Loan Program (SBALP) Wind Data

Since 2001, the SBALP program has deployed 56 meteorological (MET) towers across the state.

To see the locations of all our current and past MET towers throughout Virginia and to download wind data (Excel Spreadsheets) and data reports (pdf files), view our interactive maps.

School MET Tower Data

In 2010, Virginia joined the Wind for Schools Program, which is currently being sponsored by Wind Powering America. As part of Wind for Schools, we offer a Partner School program in which we loan 20-meter meteorological towers outfitted with an anemometer and wind vane to schools. School may also opt to loan a meteorological tower to evaluate the wind resource before deciding whether to install a wind turbine and become a Host School (install a wind turbine on campus).

To date, the Center for Wind Energy has deployed a total of five meteorological towers under the Wind for School Partner Program.
